• SHOT Show Day 3 Video Roundup and Products from Pelican, EOTech, Nikon & More!

    Jan 20 • News, Videos • 6627

Day 3 of SHOT Show was fantastic.  A TON of great new products were shown, and they cover a wide variety of uses, from keeping your gear safe to taking accurate shots both near and far!  We’re going to have exclusive video interviews that showcase the products below, but I want to give you some details now so you can get excited.

Crimson Trace Adds a Bit of Star Power To SHOT Show

GearExpert.com - Iain Harrison and Crimson TraceCrimson Trace hosted a reunion for winners of fan favorite Top Shot, which, for those of you who don’t know, is a hit show on the History Channel for shooting enthusiasts.  To lend some gravitas to their already sweet lineup of new products Crimson Trace had first season winner Iain Harrison showing off some of their new products.  He’s a pretty cool guy, and our Director of Product Intelligence Steve Ledin was able to get a photo with him.  Steve actually met Iain before, on a hog hunt last March.  It’s great to see Steve interact with such an accomplished marksman.

On the new product side, Crimson Trace brought the Rail Master to SHOT Show.  No doubt you’re already well aware of how awesome the laser sights by Crimson Trace are, but the Rail Master is a universal laser sight that will fit any Picatinny or Weaver-style rail-equipped pistol or rifle.  It’s small and lightweight, but you still get a quality laser, so if you have a large gun collection (and why wouldn’t you?) and don’t want to have to buy a separate laser sight for every gun, the Crimson Trace Rail Master is the tool for you!

Pelican Innovates for Our Technologically Advanced World!

GearExpert SHOT Show Pelican Case1My favorite booth this year had to be Pelican‘s.  Their cases are simply amazing.  Not only are they incredibly tough (soldiers throw them out of helicopters), but they’re also cleverly designed, with a bunch of really cool features and innovations to make your life easier.

    GearExpert SHOT Show Pelican Case2

First up we saw the Pelican Hardback Case.  There are a few different models, with some designed for laptops, while others are better for tablets, and since I love my tablet, I really liked these cases.  So what makes them great?  Well, toughness is obviously key.  The main point of having a case is protecting your stuff, whether you have a tablet, computer, camera or rifle that needs to be safeguarded, so the trusted quality of Pelican is welcome.  Your tablet will be protected from shocks and impact without scratching the screen, and the case is waterproof so you don’t need to worry about rain or dropping it in a puddle or lake.  The guys from Pelican even showed off how they can submerge the case and your electronics are still protected.  Pretty cool stuff.GearExpert SHOT Show Pelican Case3

But the Hardback Case for tablets is more than just a quality tool for protecting your tablet.  It also features a foam insert to hold your tablet upright, and there’s space for a bluetooth keyboard.  When you open the case you can just start typing away and using your tablet like it’s a laptop.  And the case is lightweight and comes with a carrying strap, so you don’t have to worry about lugging it around.

GearExpert SHOT Show Pelican CaseThe other really cool new item from Pelican at SHOT Show is the Hybrid Traveler.  It’s a really cool backpack/luggage series of cases that combine the flexibility of many tactical bags with a quality hard case to protect electronics.  I haven’t seen it in action, but the pictures look really cool.  The basic idea is that the Hybrid Traveler is two cases in one.  There’s a hard case that’s waterproof and perfect for your laptop or tablet. Another outer case is soft, but still has plenty of foam padding and ventilation.  It’s a great place to put your SLR camera or any other gear you want to take along.  There are plenty of extra compartments for you to haul anything you may need, and everything will be afforded a great deal of protection.  Our video guy uses Pelican hard cases to keep his cameras safe and secure, but he thought the Hybrid Traveler would be better for next year’s SHOT Show because of how lightweight it is and how easy it will be to transport.

All in all, Pelican had a really great showing this year.

Nikon Brings High Value to Quality, Simple Optics

GearExpert SHOT Show Nikon P223We’re big fans of Nikon because they know balance quality and price as well as anyone.  Their latest riflescope is the P223 3X32 BDC Compact Scope, which was a big deal around SHOT Show.  Everyone was talking about it, and it’s not hard to figure out why.  This scope is simple but effective.  Rather than attaching a bunch of bells and whistles that only a small portion of shooters use, Nikon has taken quality glass and calibrated it perfectly.  The Nikon P223 was made for AR-style rifles, and it is the perfect scope for shooters at every level.  If you’re just starting out you won’t have to deal with a complicated reticle or excessive adjustments, and if you’ve been shooting your whole life it’ll give you the reliable performance you need for your regular hunting trips.

Adding to the simplicity of the scope, the P223 uses a 2 piece mounting system, and you shouldn’t have any trouble sighting in.  That’s a welcome relief for any shooter.  You want to get out there and make some shots, not endlessly fiddle with mounts!

GearExpert SHOT Show Nikon Monarch 5Another really cool optic at SHOT Show from Nikon is the Monarch 5 Binoculars.  They only released the Monarch 3 a little while ago, and we are big fans of those here at GearExpert by OpticsPlanet.  The Monarch 5s are the next step up, with lightweight construction coupled with durability.  The glass is high quality but also eco-friendly, as it was manufactured using no lead or arsenic, and the prism coatings are incredibly advanced so that you’ll get a bright image.  I think a lot of people will be enjoying the Monarch 5s this year.  They’re already available at OpticsPlanet, so there’s no need to wait for them to be released!

Streamlight’s TLR-4 Lights Up SHOT Show!

GearExpert SHOT Show Streamlight TLR-4Streamlight had a couple cool new products this year, but the one every wants to know more about is the TLR-4.  We’ve already had people contact us to make orders!  I don’t have the exact release date yet, but I did get to learn a bit more about this fantastic weapon-mountable flashlight!  First up, it’s very compact. The TLR-3 is a great little light, and the TLR-4 looked even smaller at SHOT Show.  It uses LED lights, which, when combined with the quality construction, makes this a very tough weapon light.  It generates about 110 lumens of light, which should be more than bright enough for most situations.

But the Streamlight TLR-4 isn’t just a flashlight.  It also has a laser sight, so you can enjoy fast target acquisition while you light up your target!  The On/Off switch is ambidextrous and easy to use for momentary illumination.  We’ll be seeing a lot more of the TLR-4 in an upcoming video, but it really impressed.

EOTech stops Zombies Dead in Their Tracks.  Well.. MORE Dead

GearExpert.com EOTech Zombie StopperEOTech had some fun this year, but they also made some great improvements to existing product lines for greater functionality.  First up, we have to talk zombies.  I briefly mentioned that we saw the EOTech XPS2-Z Zombie Stopper Holographic Weapon Sight on Tuesday, but we got to play with it a bit today.  EOTech actually put together a whole zombie shotgun, with their new fore-end light and the XPS2-Z.  You can see Steve holding it in the picture.  It looks pretty cool.  The XPS-Z replaces the red dot with a red biohazard symbol, and it has the biohazard logo on the sides and top.  But just because it’s geared specifically for zombies doesn’t mean it lacks quality.  It’s very similar to the EOTech EXPS-2, with the same great battery life, fast target acquisition and super tough construction.  Very tough.  Very neat.

The IFL-Integrated Fore-End Light is a great fit whether you’re hunting the undead or in a tactical situation and need a reliable light on your 12 gauge shotgun. There are ambidextrous pressure pads, so lefties aren’t left out, and the LED light is both bright and durable.  This EOTech Fore-End Light has three modes: constant-on, momentary and strobe.  I’m pretty sure zombies rely more on their sense of smell than their sight, so you may not blind them with the strobe, but a regular human’s eyes will need a minute to adjust.

If, sorry, WHEN I’m on the run from zombies I’ll be glad to have these two great new weapon accessories.  I’ll turn the tide of the zombie plague single-handed. I’ll be a hero.

GearExpert SHOT Show G33 magnifierOne other great new product EOTech displayed at SHOT Show is the G33 Magnifier.  We have the EOTech G23 Magnifier available now, and it’s a fantastic accessory for a red dot sight, but EOTech thought they could make a few little improvements.  There are three main differences between the G33 and the G23.  The G33 is smaller, which makes it easier to find room on your rail (always welcome), it has a diopter adjuster, which allows you to make subtle changes to the image for a better view, and instead of being flip-to-side mounted, it’s shift-to-side.  We actually thought it was a push-to-side, but the EOTech representative was very clear that it’s shift-to-side.  Either way you say it, this magnifier is a little quicker and easier to get in line with your red dot sight now.

Overall, we had a great time at SHOT Show yesterday.  What’s really amazing is that all the news we’ve shown so far just scratches the surface of the coverage we’ll have for you in the coming weeks.  We have exclusive video interviews coming, and you’ll get to see these great products in action, with more details straight from the brand representatives and our product specialists!  Keep coming back to GearExpert by OpticsPlanet.  We have so much more for you from SHOT Show 2012!

We have a lot of great SHOT Show Day 3 Pics to share today!  I think day 3 was the best day so far.  We got to talk to some of our favorite brands, like EOTech, Nikon, Streamlight and Pelican!  Their products absolutely astounded.  I thought EOTech’s Zombie Stopper Holographic Weapon Sight would be my favorite product from SHOT Show, but then Pelican had to throw a curve ball with their new tablet cases! Such a great day.  I can’t wait to see all the video as it rolls out starting Monday!  Make sure to come back and see them for yourself!

  • SHOT Show Day 2 New Products from Weaver, BlackHawk, SOG & More!

    Jan 19 • News • 6614

Yesterday was crazy.  We saw a ton of awesome new products, and there’s a lot of exciting things to talk about.  SHOT Show has been a major success so far, and I can’t believe I’m going to get to see more of many of these products at OpticsPlanet over the next year!  But enough about what I want; let’s get to the New Products from SHOT Show Day 2!

Weaver Launches High Quality Scopes for Every Budget

GearExpert.com Weaver KaspaWeaver loves to give a great value, and one of the ways they do that is by offering a full set of features for a reasonable price.  Their latest offering is the Weaver Kaspa series.  We actually already have some of these great riflescopes and binoculars available at OpticsPlanet!  They’re great for hunting and tactical situations, and there are a number of different magnification options, so you can find the version that’s perfect for your needs.

If you find yourself shooting in low light situations you’ll want an illuminated reticle.  For this, I like the Weaver Kaspa ILL Mil Dot 10×50 Riflescope.  The reticle is super easy to see, and the windage and elevation adjustment turrets are high-set for ease of use. The turrets also reset to zero so you can customize it to your specifications.  Weaver has kept the quality high by making the scope waterproof, fogproof and shock proof, so you can count on the Weaver Kaspa to perform in tough conditions.

We also have the Weaver Kaspa Open Hinged Binoculars that were shown off at SHOT Show.  They’re just as tough as the Kaspa riflescopes, but they have an ergonomic design to make them more comfortable for holding in your hands for hours of glassing.  The eyecups twist out to make them easier to adjust and help eyeglass-wearers (me!) use them more comfortably.

All these great features, and Weaver is keeping the cost down!  These new Weaver Optics are sure to be popular for hunters, birders and outdoors enthusiasts in 2012!

BLACKHAWK Brings a Little Feminine Style to Tactical Pants

GearExpert.com BLACKHAWK Women's PantBLACKHAWK has some seriously tough apparel for military personnel, shooting enthusiasts and anyone else who wants their clothes to be tough as nails.  The company was started by a former Navy SEAL, and he knew that quality had to come first.  It always has, but while their gear performs amazingly well and looks great, there haven’t been a lot of quality clothing options for women.

Enter the new BLACKHAWK Women’s Off Duty Pant.  Are they tough?  Oh yeah.  These pants have been treated for water resistance, and the material will keep up with whatever stresses are thrown their way.  The belt loops are extra sturdy to accommodate heavy duty belts and holsters, and the pockets have been designed to add storage without ruining the aesthetic of the pants.  These BLACKHAWK pants are great for concealed carry, undercover operations and everyday use.  BLACKHAWK has really given ladies a great new tactical clothing option.  No longer are they limited to smaller versions of men’s clothing.  These pants were designed with the female body in mind.  Comfort and style has been combined for optimal performance.  They look great.

5.11 Tactical Innovated Tactical Clothing with Flex-Tac Fabric

Trevor was pretty excited about the new pants shown off by 5.11 Tactical.  The 5.11 Tactical Stryke Pant features the all-new Flex-Tac material, which is extra durable and will give you a performance boost as soon as you put them on.  5.11 Tactical saw that users need both a snug fit and great range of motion, but achieving this can be difficult with traditional materials.  Tighter pants won’t get caught up as often as baggy pants, but you won’t be able to bend and twist as easily.  That’s where Flex-Tac comes in.  This new material is very strong while also being lightweight and breathable.  Usually you have to accept extra heat when you add strength.  Not here.  And the Flex-Tac fabric stretches about 20% more than traditional materials.  This means that you can have a snug fit without excess fabric hanging off the sides while still being able to squat, run, jump and twist without hindrance.  My pants are always getting ripped, so I can’t wait to try out a pair of these 5.11 Tactical Stryke Pants!

We also spoke with 5.11 Tactical about the new bags they premiered, and they’re really cool, but I’m going to let our upcoming video give you all the details.  Stay tuned.

SOG Knives Prove you can Cast No Shadow!

SOG makes a number of great specialty knives that add functionality to an already top notch blade.  One thing I really like about some of their knives is the included LED light.  This is incredibly useful for seeing what you’re cutting.  It’s a great addition, but when precision is crucial, having the knife cast a shadow on your target can be problematic.  With this in mind, SOG has developed the BladeLight, which comes in both a fixed blade and folding blade.  What makes this light cool is that instead of having a single LED light on the side of the handle (which would cause a shadow on the opposite side), there are TWO LEDs, one on each side.  This is pretty cool.  If you’re out camping and need to see a little better, you’ll be glad you have one of these great SOG BladeLights.

GunVault makes Accessing Your Pistol Quick and Easy

GearExpert GunVault SpeedVaultMany people want to have their firearm close at hand in case of emergency, but at the same time they don’t want it left casually out where the wrong person might get hold of it.  GunVault has a number of great handgun safes that are perfect for your bedside table, closet or under the bed.  While these safes are easy to use and you can speedily get to your firearm, it can take a couple extra seconds that you might not always have.  For this reason they’ve developed the SpeedVault.  It’s a vertically mounted gun safe that can be accessed either with a punch-in code or a touch of a finger with the biometric fingerprint reader.  Once opened, the vault pops the handgun out at a 45 degree angle, perfect for quickly grabbing in emergency situations.  I’m inserting two pics so you can see the safe both closed and open.  This should give you a better idea of how it works.  Definitely a very innovative and useful product that I can’t wait to try out!GearExpert GunVault SpeedVault2

Our GearExpert team saw a few more products yesterday, but the upcoming videos for the Trijicon, Galco and Armalite booths will give you a better idea of what they brought to SHOT Show.  Very cool stuff that you’ll need to see, especially the Trijicon SRS, which is an ACOG Riflescope that uses just one AA battery!  You can see it in the picture at the top, but we have a full interview with Trijicon on both the SRS and the TARS that’ll be up in the near future, so stay tuned for more news on the latest products straight from the floor of SHOT Show!
